Leaders of Epinext

Fabrice Bartolomei, Prof., Ph.D., M.D.

Director

Fabrice Bartolomei is a neurologist specializing in epilepsy and Professor at the Aix-Marseille University (France) leading the “Service de Neurophysiologie Clinique”. Prof. Bartolomei is also the medical director of the Centre Saint-Paul Hôpital Henri Gastaut, one of Europe‘s oldest hospitals managing epilepsy and created by Henri Gastaut in 1960.

Prof. Bartolomei coordinates the clinical network CINAPSE dedicated to the management of adult and pediatric cases of epilepsy in Marseille. He is also member of the Research unit INSERM U1106 (Physionet team).

He is particularly involved in the presurgical evaluation of patients with drug resistant epilepsy and is a world leader in the analysis of Stereo-EEG recordings.

He has published numerous studies in the field of epilepsy, particularly on the concept of “Epileptogenic Networks” and on the relation between stress, emotions and epilepsy. He has largely contributed to promote the use of EEG/SEEG analysis in focal epilepsies and the co-inventor of the “Epileptogenicity Index”, a method for assessing epileptogenicity of brain regions.

He is the vice president of the LFCE (Ligue Française contre l’Épilepsie) and President of the Scientific Committee of the LFCE. He is also member of the ILAE (International League against Epilepsy) task force “Neurophysiology”.

Grants

  • Project Biofeedback from the General Council, 2013

  • Evaluation of the impact of stress in epilepsy from the French Foundation for Research in Epilepsy, 2011

Alfonso Represa, Ph.D., M.D.

Deputy Director

Alfonso Represa is director of the INMED (Institut de Neurobiologie de la Méditerranée), a reference center for both Neuroscience and Epilepsy in France. He is also head of the “Developmental disorders of cortical expression and epilepsy” team aiming to assess alterations in brain development involved in epileptic encephalopathies including neuronal migration and the factors for epilepsy susceptibility in immature tissues.

His team is developing neurophysiological, electrophysiological and post-genomic approaches, with particular attention to animal models of neurological diseases of genetic origin.

With his collaborators he contributed to series of pioneering observations published in 142 publications (Google Scholar h-index: 42, i10-index 97). He serves on various Editorial boards and scientific councils.

Dominique Debanne, Ph.D.

Deputy Director

Dominique Debanne is Director of the Ion channels and Synaptic Neurobiology Unit and Director of Research at CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique) [link].

His scientific contributions focus on the rules of long-term synaptic modifications depending on spike-timing, the plasticity of intrinsic neuronal excitability and the cellular mechanisms of neuronal timing.

Dr. Debanne has been awarded several national awards including the INSERM AVENIR label. He had served on many Editorial boards and he is the author of more than 70 scientific articles and book chapters.

Viktor Jirsa, Ph.D.

Deputy Director

Viktor Jirsa studied Physics and Philosophy in Stuttgart, Germany and is Director of Research at CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique) and Director of the Inserm UMR1106 Institut de Neurosciences des Systèmes (INS).

Since the late 90s, Dr. Jirsa has made pioneering contributions to the understanding of how network structure constrains the emergence of functional dynamics using methods from nonlinear dynamic system theory and computational neuroscience. His work laid the theoretical basis for the connectome and its associated large-scale modeling efforts.

Dr. Jirsa has been awarded several international and national awards for his research, including the Prime of Scientific Excellence (CNRS, 2011), the Early Career Distinguished Scholar Award by NASPSPA in 2004 and the François Erbsmann Prize in Biomedical Imaging in 2001.

Dr. Jirsa has significant experience in coordinating national and international research consortia and organizations. Since 2005 he has been the project leader of the neuroinformatics project “The Virtual Brain” involving 11 laboratories worldwide. He is work package leader in the European Flagship “Human Brain Project” and is responsible for the coordination of the modeling efforts across the various disciplines including its clinical applications (>500 investigators).
